Message from Your Doctors
We love the people and
culture here on the Outer Banks and
northeastern North Carolina. We both grew up
here and wanted to return to serve the
families that are a part of our heritage.
Our mission is providing
Kitty Hawk and all of our surrounding
communities with great smiles and superior
oral health, using high quality
state-of-the-art dental services in the most
modern facility available in northeastern
North Carolina.
We pride ourselves in
providing excellence in dental services,
committing to principled leadership within
our community, and always seeking to advance
dentistry in the interest and well being of
our patients, in the pursuit of achieving
their ultimate satisfaction.
The field of dentistry
strives to improve the quality of life in
communities. Dentistry has come a long way
in the last 25 years, and especially in the
last 5 to 10 years the changes have
accelerated as new technologies have made
dentistry, not only safe but more
comfortable as well. Dentistry today not
only removes decay and fixes broken teeth,
but performs many other important functions.
Research in the last decade shows that
diseases in the mouth can be large
contributing factors to serious illnesses
such as coronary heart disease, cancer, and
low birth weight babies. Educating patients
of these facts is a large responsibility in
our profession.
We fix smiles, not teeth!
In our opinion, none of our patients should
have to wear dentures or partials. Implants
and bridges are far superior tooth
replacement modalities and are a large part
of our practice. Almost anybody who has lost
a tooth is a candidate for these treatments.
As baby-boomers mature,
the number of large amalgam (silver)
fillings that need to be replaced is
staggering. High-end esthetic treatments
such as ceramic onlays and porcelain crowns
are becoming the standard of care for
replacing the hundreds of millions of
fillings that have been placed over the last
50 years.
Non-invasive periodontal
(gum) therapies makes prevention and
treatment of periodontal disease a much more
pleasant experience for the patient. We have
been highly trained and are very experienced
in not only these procedures, but many other
therapies.
We are excited to be part
of the field of dentistry and all of the
potential that it holds for our friends on
the Outer Banks and in northeastern North
Carolina.
Doctors
Dr. Markus P. Heyder, DDS & Dr. Alison B.
Heyder, DDS
Dr. Markus Heyder is a
native of Currituck and Dr. Alison Heyder is
a native of Hertford in Perquimans County.
He received his Bachelor of Science from
Wake Forest University, and she received her
Bachelor of Science summa cum laude from
East Carolina University. Both received
their DDS degree from the University of
North Carolina School of Dentistry in Chapel
Hill.
Prior to opening Atlantic
Dentistry on the Outer Banks, Dr. Markus
Heyder practiced in a state-of-the-art
dental practice in Fayetteville, where he
gained expertise and experience in many
aspects of dentistry, with an emphasis on
cosmetic and implant dentistry. Dr. Heyder
has a passion for complex oral implant
rehabilitation and is dedicated to
continuously furthering his education and
bringing the latest dental implant
techniques to northeastern North Carolina.
He has completed advanced programs in dental
implant placement and restoration, advanced
bone grafting techniques, Computer Aided
Implant Rehabilitation, and multiple CEREC
restoration programs.
Dr. Alison Heyder
furthered her dental training at the VA
Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC, gaining
experience treating medically compromised
patients. She then entered private practice
in Fayetteville. She enjoys staying current
with new technologies in restorative and
prosthodontic dentistry and in CEREC
technology.
Their love of dentistry
and a wish to return to their native home,
led to the opening of Atlantic Dentistry in
Kitty Hawk. They are committed to bringing
the best in dental services to the people of
the Outer Banks and northeastern North
Carolina.
The commitment continues
with providing a true state-of-the-art
practice for the benefit and comfort of
their patients. Dental health and well-being
is the utmost priority. Drs. Heyder continue
to seek out new methods and technology to
ensure patients have the best access to the
highest quality dental care.
Markus and Alison Heyder
live in the area with their daughter,
spending most of their free time enjoying
the great beaches of the Outer Banks,
sailing their catamaran, and spending time
with family and friends.

Dental Hygienists
Melanie Buen, RDH,
Kill Devil Hills
I have a total of over 11
years of chairside dental experience and
four years experience in Pediatric
Dentistry.
I earned my associate degree in dental
hygiene in Annandale, Virginia from Northern
Virginia Community College. I am a member of
the American Dental Hygienist Association (ADHA),
and I love living in the community where I
work. I enjoy being part of the talented and
experienced Atlantic Dentistry team that
helps the Drs. Heyder improve the smiles and
oral health of patients.
After hours, I like going to the beach and
spending quality time with my two sons and
husband.
Patricia Nixon, RDH, Manteo
As a native Northern
Ohioan, I have spent most of my life
enjoying Lake Erie, Canada and their
surrounding islands. I made the Outer Banks
my home after vacationing here for the first
time in the summer of 2005. After four short
months of credentialing, I became a
transplanted "local."
I previously practiced
hygiene at a general practice and for a
periodontist in the Cleveland area. Always
making the most of the outdoors, I enjoyed
the north coast winters and snowmobiling. I
have not traded in my snowmobile but I have
purchased a few more pairs of flip flops
since I traded the "North Coast" for the
"East Coast!"
My other passions include
writing and video production as I worked in
broadcasting in my first career.
A mother of one, I manage
to stay pretty busy exploring this part of
the country with her while trying to teach
her that life is one big adventure so make
the most of it, don't sweat the small
stuff....and oh yeah, don't forget to floss!

foremost, I enjoy helping people, whether it

swimming, going to the beach and shopping.
Jamie Kendzulak, CDA,
Jarvisburg
I am a Certified Dental
Assistant with 13 years of experience. I
worked for a periodontist for 7 years and
have spent the rest of my career in
reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry. I
enjoy my job as I am constantly challenged
in the day to day situations that dentistry
presents. I am originally from Central, New
Jersey, but relocated to the Outer Banks in
2007. Away from the office I enjoy traveling
and spending time with family.

Charlotte Habbel,
Treatment Plan Coordinator, Nags Head
My husband and I moved to
the Outer Banks five years ago for a more
relaxed lifestyle and to start enjoying
retirement. As a CDA and office manager in
several practices and states for 18 years, I
appreciate the need for great dental care.
My personal job experience with Capital One
Healthcare is an asset in helping assist
dental patients secure payment options that
would enable them to receive the dental care
they need. Atlantic Dentistry is a state of
the art practice that focuses on total
patient care while providing flexible
payment options to patients and I truly love
my position here.
Our grandchildren spend
most of the summer with us and our beaches
become our favorite place to have fun. I
enjoy traveling, reading, cooking and
sewing.
Kathy Romanczyk, Office
Manager, Harbinger
My husband and I have been
living and working on the Outer Banks for
over 20 years. During most of this time, we
have been involved in the construction and
real estate industry. My most rewarding
career position has been working with
Atlantic Dentistry. My previous career
experience in Oral Surgery helped me to
realize how important it is to work with
patients to help save and restore their
teeth.
Away from work, we are
currently remodeling a house in the
mountains of Virginia (for our later years).
Our two children live close by and we have
three wonderful grandchildren that we enjoy
spoiling.
Betsy Radford, Patient
Care Coordinator, Nags Head
I have lived on the Outer
Banks for seven years now. My husband and I
moved here to be near our sons and their
families. We now have become grandparents
and are loving every minute of it.
I have worked in the
dental field for many years now. My position
as patient coordinator at Atlantic Dentistry
allows me the opportunity to serve the local
community and work with a great team of
professionals.
